Customer service is becoming more and more important these days. Not simply because companies are striving to improve their customer care, but because customers are demanding good customer service as a matter of course.

Companies that do not recognize the importance of good customer care are being left behind. Good and bad experiences of customer service spread like wild fire these days. Delight or annoy a customer and through word of mouth (and the internet) literally thousands of potential customers can be won or lost.

So what to do? Have another meeting? Implement yet another customer care program? First things first; try focusing on the Customer Service Basics.

These basics encompass listening, understanding and delighting. The concept is not new, and it's not rocket science. Yet so many companies forge ahead with complex projects and systems, wasting precious time and spending thousands of dollars of new fangled ideas. If only they would start at the beginning and listen to their customers!
